Note: These instructions are for boards that have 'enforced' MFA for all users. If you are not on a board with enforced MFA and want to find out more about it read our Setting up multi-factor authentication (MFA) help article

Your board has enforced MFA for everyone using GovernorHub. Use the steps below to set MFA on your GovernorHub account:

  1. On your smartphone, using either Google Play (on Android) or App Store (on iOS), search and download an authenticator app.

Examples of free apps you can use are Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or Authy. Once downloaded follow the set-up instructions within the Authentication app

If you do not have a smartphone you should talk to your Chair/Governance professional about how you can fund the purchase of a physical hardware token.

2. Log into GovernorHub (if you were already logged in you may need to log out and in again), you will see the screen below:

3. Click ‘setup TOTP’, it will take you to this screen:

4. You now need to use the information in this window to go to your authentication app and approve the connection between the two systems.

You have a choice of ways you can do this ...

a. Use your authentication app to scan the QR code from GovernorHub - the app will ask for permission to use your camera, you can then take a photo of the QR code shown in GovernorHub (do not use the QR code above, this is for example purposes only).

b. Enter the code from GovernorHub into your authentication app - the app will ask you to type in the long code shown at the bottom of the window(do not use the code above, this is for example purposes only).

5. The authentication app will give you a 6-digit code to type into GovernorHub - you can remember this or copy it ready to paste.

6. When you go back to GovernorHub you will see the window that was there has changed to the window below - enter your 6 digit code in to the 'Code' field and click 'Verify'.

MFA is now set up. In the future whenever you log in to GovernorHub, the screen will prompt you to enter a 6 digit code. When you see this message you will need to go to your authenticator app and it will generate a code for you put into the code field on GovernorHub.

N.B. You do not need to go through the QR code process again - once you have set up once that's all ready to go. Each time you log in in future you just need to generate a code in the authenticator app.
